Inspired by writer and activist Jane Jacobs, Jane’s Walk encourages a wide range of people to design and lead a walking tour of an area they know well.
Battalion Park, with its whitewashed stone numbers, is located high on the hills overlooking the Signal Hill Shopping Centre in Calgary’s southwest. Over a hundred years ago, in and around Sarcee Training Camp, young soldiers-in-training took field stones and dotted the landscape with their Battalion numbers and crests. Today, only four of the number glyphs remain. These stone markers were a source of pride for all who returned home from battle as well as a visible reminder for generations to follow that the Great War had been kept far and away from our shores.
Walk with Calgary-based historian Harry Sanders and songwriter/author Phyllis Wheaton to hear how the stones were saved from demolition and their place ensured on the hill.
**Note the walk will involve several sets of stairs with no alternate access**
